Endodontics – What is Root Canal Treatment?

It is the process of saving the tooth by intervening in the inner pulp (nerve) tissue in cases such as deep cavities, the need for certain restorations, fractures or cracks in the tooth, and trauma.

Do I Need a Root Canal Treatment?

If your dentist tells you that you need a root canal treatment for a problematic tooth, there is nothing to worry about. Millions of teeth are saved this way every year, relieving patients’ pain and allowing teeth to remain healthy in the mouth for many years.

Sometimes, a root canal treatment may be necessary during a routine check-up without any complaints or in the following cases:

  • Sensitivity to hot and cold stimuli
  • Sensitivity to touch or chewing
  • Tooth discoloration, swelling

Is Root Canal Treatment a Painful Process?

A painless process can be achieved with modern techniques. Post-treatment sensitivity gradually decreases and disappears within a few days.

What is the Duration of the Treatment?

Typically, the treatment is completed in one or two sessions.

Does the tooth treated with a root canal die, and will I be able to use it like before?

The correct approach means saving your tooth and ensuring it lasts as long as your natural teeth.

Do teeth break after root canal treatment?

After the treatment, if the remaining tooth structure is sufficient, a filling is placed with a top restoration. In necessary cases, the structure is reinforced with special fiber posts, a filling is placed, and the tooth is protected with a crown.

Will there be pain afterwards?

Sometimes, even months or years after a successful root canal treatment, symptoms may reoccur. In such cases, the tooth can be saved by performing the root canal treatment again. In situations where endodontic treatment is insufficient, the tooth can also be treated with Endodontic Surgery (resection).
